Training

FTO
After the completion of the CLEET academy in Ada, Oklahoma, probationary officers will enter the Bixby Police Department Field Training Officer program or FTO. The FTO program is an 8-week total immersion program designed to first familiarize probationary officers with the policies and procedures of the Bixby Police Department. Then, to allow them to put into the practice these policies and procedures while under the supervision of experienced field officers. The Field Training Officers will observe and evaluate the probationary officers every move and contacts to allow the new officer the ability to refine and correct their skills while still under supervision. At the successful completion of the 8-week Field Training Program, the new officer will be assigned to one of three shifts.

Bixby Police Department Firing Range
Completed in early 2006, the Bixby Police Department firing range has been used by members of the Department since. Monthly open range days allow the individual members the ability to hone their firearms handling skills while consulting with a firearms instructor. Quarterly Department-wide shoots are being planned to allow the department members to practice their skills in a structured manner. A little added friendly competition will allow for improved handling skills while under pressure.

Training
The State of Oklahoma requires peace officer to conduct 16 hours of continuing education and 1 hour of mental health per year in order to maintain status as a CLEET certified officer. The Bixby Police Department uses the additional training above and beyond the 16 hours to develop skills in the officers of the department which may be beneficial to the overall operation of the department. Effective January 2008, the hours will change to 26 hours of CLEET training.
